Aberavon won the Second Division Title and would have been promoted into Wales' Top
Flight if the WRU didn't decide to reduce the First Division (renamed the Premier Division
from the 1997-98 season) from 12 to 8 teams. This ruling, made late in the season, meant
that there was no promotion from the Second Division (renamed the First Division from the
1997-98 season), preventing Aberavon and Llandovery from going up. In the Anglo Welsh
Second Division Competition, Aberavon were the only unbeaten Welsh team against English
opposition. In all of the 1996-97 Season's fixtures, the Wizards only lost once at home
(against Ebbw Vale in the Swalec Cup). On March 22nd, 1997 Aberavon beat
Abercynon 74 - 5 - this is a record League win for the club. Also,
Jason Ball scored 29 points (2T, 1PG, 8C) to became the highest points scorer in a match.
