The WRU National Cup begins this Saturday with Aberavon taking on WRU National Championship side Skewen at the Talbot Athletic Ground in the first round of the competition, kick off 2:30pm.
Skewen are in their second season in the National Championship after winning SSE Swalec League 1 West Central in the 2015-16 season having won twenty of their twenty-two games that season. Last season, the Tennant Park side finished in tenth place in the National Championship after winning eight and drawing one of their twenty-two games. This season, Skewen are currently in ninth place having won five from thirteen games.
The club was established in 1883, became a member club of the WRU in 1896, and moved to its current home of Tennant Park in 1935.
International players of note that have played for both Skewen and Aberavon are Max Wiltshire and Ashley Beck.
Whilst the clubs have never met in the Cup before, their last meeting took place on a Monday evening in March 2002 when Aberavon played Skewen at Tennant Park to celebrate the official switching on of the new floodlights. In that game, the Wizards scored nine tries as they ran out 53 - 10 winners with the homeside scoring two in reply.
Aberavon flanker Marvin Thomas had a great game and scored a good solo try, as did lock Steve Rees. Ricky Price, playing in centre, scored a brace of tries. The Wizards led 29 - 5 at half time with number eight Lee Bevan going over for a first half try for the hosts. Replacement outside half Gareth Lewis (British Steel) set up tries for centre Paul Morgan and wing Nicky Bonham in the second half. Natano Tiatia, Daran Griffiths and Jonathan Williams were the other try scorers for Aberavon while replacement wing Mark Hooper scored a try late on for Skewen.
