Aberavon 71 - 3 Skewen

(from Howard Evans)

Aberavon gained a 113th win in 47 years of the Welsh Cup, yet it was their first success in the last four seasons.

The 'Wizards' ran in eleven tries with fly half Stef Williams kicking eight conversions and being the general of the back division.

It was easy enough for Aberavon as Skewen were without several regulars, but the Championship side did put up a good effort at forward.

Aberavon's backs had a field day even though they lost skipper James Garland in the fifth-minute as he pulled up after touching down the opening try.

Skewen got on the board five minutes later as fly half Adam Rowlands landed a close-range penalty, but except for a brief spell in the second half they never looked likely to score again.

Chris Banfield, Mike Wilson (from a brilliant Stef Andrews run), Shaun Pearce and Jacob Blackmore all scored tries as Aberavon led 31-3 at the interval.

Jacob Flynn came on as a replacement scrum half for the second half and notched three tries as Pearce, Banfield and No 8 Craig Price, from a long run, all crossed the Skewen line.

For Skewen, full back Alex Dukes played bravely and No 8 David Morgan tackled well.

On the Aberavon side, it was good to see Stef Andrews back and looking for work all over the park, while Mike Wilson was a bundle of energy.

It was also a welcome back to David Pritchard, though he did not appear for the second half and there will be concern over James Garland's injury.

In the pack, Jacob Blackmore had a fine first half and Rhys Forse was good in tight and loose play as was young Tomas Northey, but there was bad news that prop Jon Thomas could miss the remainder of the season through injury.

A special thanks to referee Simon Rees of Beaufort who handled the game superbly with no cards in sight and allowing the game to be attractive for spectators.
