Today we welcome the Bargoed playing staff and their loyal supporters, who we remember coming here and recording a fine Cup victory a few years back and also for scoring a thumping win over us earlier this season at Bargoed Park.
The game at Bargoed was far more one-sided than the score suggested and I remember thinking after an hour that we were still in with a chance of winning, per the scoreboard, but on the field there never appeared any chance!
The Bargoed pack were absolutely rampant on that afternoon and I was amazed that our beaten pack conceded only one penalty try and I never remember thinking that way before or since.
However, since that game, while things have improved for the ‘Wizards’, it has gone horribly wrong for Bargoed. So bad indeed that 12 successive matches have been lost with only one bonus point being gained. To Aberavon watchers that day at Bargoed it seems almost impossible to understand.
So bad also that we heard a couple of weeks ago that coaches David Lynch and Gareth Gunter have gone. While I did not know Gareth, I did know David and found a splendid chap, very fair in his comments and very polite. I hope he bounces back soon.
I notice that the strong wing Ashley Norton has six tries and Mr Penalty Try has also ‘scored’ six times, but only once in the 12-match run. Josh Prosser has scored 123 points by my reckoning – more than any Aberavon player. But, the punchline is that Aberavon are 45 points ahead.
I hope to get over illness and be present today for an unusual home kick-off at 2.30pm on a Saturday!! Isn’t this one of the reasons that the game below international level is dying?
Finally, we welcome referee Dewi Phillips and hope he and both sides enjoy the game.
