Aberavon were out of the starting blocks like a shot and led 17-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Though Vale opened the scoring via a Bryan Shelbourne penalty, a long pass from Aberavon No. 8 Robbie Morgan freed wing Steve Davies for the opening try.

Fly-half Ricky Thomas added the extras and soon after he landed a penalty, making it 10-3.

The Porthcawl player then displayed his running skills by setting up a try for impressive flanker Chris Davies.

Thomas also converted, but the Steelmen launched a fightback in the 21st minute when wing Andrew Bevan engineered a try for ex-Wizard Kristian Owen.

A superb try then followed from centre Owen, who got on the end of his kick ahead to touch down with Shelbourne converting.

And Vale took the lead in the 32nd minute when the driving play of the forwards set up a try for flanker Neil Aiono that Shelbourne improved on.

That left the Steelmen ahead 22-17, and in a remarkable turnaround home wing Andrew Bevan touched down at the posts on 35 minutes.

Shelbourne converted, only for a Thomas penalty to trim the deficit to 29-20 in the approach to half-time.

But in the final move of the half, Vale claimed their fifth try with Neath scrum-half Gareth Williams dabbing down close to the flag.

The sides changed ends with the Steelmen leading 34-20 while they forged further ahead with tries from wing James Lewis and prop Anthony Lott.

Shelbourne converted both, and incredibly the scoring then dried up and although Aberavon did a lot of pressing, they were unable to get back into contention.
