Konica Minolta Cup, Quarter-Finals, Talbot Athletic Ground, Saturday
April 5th 2008
 |
Aberavon welcome Ebbw Vale to the Talbot Athletic Ground
this coming Saturday in the Quarter-Finals of the Konica Minolta Cup, kick off
5:30pm.
The Wizards have played the Steelmen three times in the Cup
competition with Aberavon leading the series by two wins to
one. |
The sides first met in the cup in 1983-84 when the
Wizards beat the Steelmen 16 - 7 at Eugene Cross Park in the
Schweppes Cup Quarter-Finals. They didn't meet again in the
competition for another 13 seasons when Ebbw Vale won 32 - 8 at
the Talbot Athletic Ground in the Swalec Cup. The sides last met
in the cup two seasons ago when the Wizards narrowly won 33 - 31
at Ebbw Vale.
In that last cup meeting Aberavon won through to round five, but
as the score line suggests it was a nail-biter all the way. Ebbw
Vale led 10-0, then 17-10 and although 13 points down with seven
minutes remaining, fought back to push the visitors to the wire.
The home side's points came from tries by James Quirk, Andrew
McLaughlan, Andy Edwards and Andrew Whiteman. Owen Biddiscombe
kicked three conversions and a penalty while Andrew Whiteman added
another conversion. For the Wizards, Richard Carter scored a brace
of tries, while others came from Paul Bamsey and Jamie Davies.
Jamie kicked two conversions and three penalties.
The Wizards team that day was: Liam Gadd; Richard Carter, Paul
Bamsey (rep Gareth Knox), Darren Ryan, Daran Griffiths; Jamie
Davies, Dan Hawkins; Mike Harris (rep Lloyd Howell), Chris Wells
(rep Christian Richards), Anthony Edwards (rep James Jones),
Andrew Fisher (rep Paul Morgan), Chris Gittins (capt), Ian Moore,
Richard Morris (rep Darryl Thomas), Simon Peters.
The referee for Saturday’s game is Neil Ballard, aided by touch
judges Steve Edwards, Mark Baker and Hopkin Thomas.
