Llanelli v Aberavon MatchPack : Preview

Llanelli

v Aberavon
Principality Building Society Premiership, Stradey Park, Saturday September 20th 2008

Aberavon and Llanelli meet in a top-of-the-table clash this coming Saturday (K.O. 2:30pm) when the Wizards travel to Stradey Park for the last time, as the West Walians move to "Parc Y Scarlets" in November.

Like the Wizards, Llanelli have won both their opening games this season. On the opening weekend they beat the Wanderers 24 - 13 at Stradey Park before scoring six converted tries in their 42 - 26 win at Pontypool last weekend. Llanelli's try scorers against the Wanderers were lock Adam Powell, full back Dan Evans and prop Ian Jones. Against Pooler, wing Mike Davies scored a hat-trick of tries, whilst others came from wing Matthew Jacobs, lock Aaron Shingler and prop Ian Jones.

Head-to-head Aberavon and Llanelli have faced each other 18 times in the Welsh National League with the Stradey Park outfit leading the series by 13 wins to 4 with another game drawn. At Stradey Park the home side lead 8 to 1 with the Wizards sole league win coming at the ground in 2003-04.

In that game five seasons ago former Tondu full back Lee Byrne was a thorn in Aberavon's side. However, the Wizards had too much fire power up front for the young Llanelli side and held on to the win 31 - 25 despite being reduced to fourteen players for the last ten minutes of play in the second half.

Aberavon's first half points came via a try by Daran Griffiths and a conversion and two penalties by Jamie Davies. For the homeside, Daniel Rogers scored a try while Ceiron Thomas converted and added a penalty.

In the second half the Wizards scored a further two tries with Richard Lewis and Ricky Price touching down. Davies added a conversion and two penalties. Llanelli also scored two further tries with Rogers getting a second while Richard Davies also touching down. Thomas added a conversion and penalty.

The Wizards team that day was: Richard Lewis; Daran Griffiths, Aled James, Gareth Jones (rep Darren Ryan), Ricky Price; Jamie Davies, Dan Hawkins; Dinlle Francis (rep Mike Harris), James Jones (rep Jon Owen), Paul Breeze, Steve Rees (rep Dafydd Owen), Chris Gittins (capt), Jamie Summers (rep Matthew Powell), Richard Morris, Steffan Edwards.

The referee for Saturday’s game is Gwyn Morris, aided by touch judges Andrew Miles and Martyn Williams.
